Job Summary

The Import Specialist Freight Forwarder – Ocean & Air Import is responsible for overseeing and managing complex international import operations via both ocean and air freight. This Import Specialist role ensures the timely, compliant, and cost-effective movement of goods while serving as a subject-matter expert, key customer contact, and operational leader. The position requires close coordination with carriers, customs brokers, overseas agents, trucking companies, and internal teams.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage end-to-end ocean and air import shipments from origin through final delivery
  • Oversee customs clearance processes and ensure compliance with all applicable customs regulations, trade laws, and government agency requirements
  • Coordinate with ocean carriers, airlines, customs brokers, trucking companies, warehouses, and overseas agents
  • Prepare, review, and approve import documentation, including commercial invoices, bills of lading, air waybills, packing lists, ISF filings, and other required paperwork
  • Track shipments proactively and provide accurate, timely updates to customers and internal stakeholders
  • Resolve complex shipment issues, delays, claims, and discrepancies with minimal supervision
  • Ensure accurate freight billing, cost control, and margin management
  • Maintain detailed and accurate shipment records in the logistics management system
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for key customers, delivering a high level of service
  • Support process improvements, operational efficiency, and best practices
  • Provide guidance and support to junior import staff as needed

Educational Background / Work Experience

  • Minimum of 3 + years of experience in freight forwarding or international logistics
  • Strong hands-on experience in both ocean and air import operations

  • Ability to calculate freight costs, rates, duties, and related charges accurately

  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage high-volume shipments

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills

Function / Market & Industry Knowledge / Business Acumen

  • In-depth knowledge of ocean and air freight logistics processes
  • Strong understanding of international trade laws, customs regulations, and compliance requirements
  • Familiarity with Incoterms and global shipping practices

Language Skills

  • Fluency in English required
  • Additional language skills are a plus

Computer Literacy

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Experience with freight forwarding CargoWise is preferred
